This is looking down into a jar of dead bugs - the ones with the stripes.
Once a week or so, we scoot down the 35 beds of potato plants to kill all the Colorado potato beetles we can see. A fairly gross task, if you squish them (orange goo) but I choose the jar method: soapy water in the jar and dropping them in. There's usually at least 100 each, with 4 or 5 of us hunting.
The beetles look cute, as you can see, but they would destroy our potato crop if we didn't STAY VIGILANT!

I HATE potato bugs! My dad used to pay us 5 cents per bug when we were little. I have distinct memories of little Stina forgetting to put a lid on her jar of collected bugs and them crawling all up her arms and shoulders and her crying with dismay. The soap in the jar is a great method!
