slouching towards vegetarianism

Saw this on Bittman's blog, and yikes! a graph of animal slaughter in the US that is not all that pleasant to look at, or think about. One of a number of things lately stacking up in the vegetarian pile.

I'm still eating meat - calm down out there, folks - but it's getting harder and harder. Even my really cool middle-aged elementary-school-teacher aunt just became a vegetarian! I'm surrounded.

Also surrounded by small-sized vegetables, these days. Spent yesterday morning planting onions: quite nice.

Maybe "flexitarianism" is the solution for you? I remember reading once about the Thai government's official food pyramid recommending meat in the "sparingly" category of once or twice a month. Our family isn't quite there yet, but we're getting closer. And it's easier on our budget - at least in Ecuador, with lots of cheap fresh fruits and veggies.
